We experienced it today.
Nobody was yelling in the streets. No one had an agenda. No one left sad. Everyone came for a sole purpose.
It seems like our culture, and we as individuals have been deprived of it being acceptable to get along. We as a nation(USA), have swerved sharply towards being a people known for what we love and have undying passion for, to a people who hate,…everything. There is hate for others not like them in succeeding at something. There is hate for people who aren’t like them. There is hate for those with differing ideas and hate for those with strong opinions.
What happened to us? How did we slip into such a horrible state of being. We have swerved off the road so far, there seems to be no recovery. It is wearing to watch the news, read the paper, or put up with social media pundits pushing their agendas. What happened to David Brinkley and Chet Huntley( 1956-1970) presenting the news without ‘leaning’ too much one way or another? What happened to Paul Harvey’s soothing and confident sharing of middle-America happenings with the kitty getting saved out of the tree by the volunteer fire-fighters?
Unity has been compromised by over-opinionated zealots and dark veiled shepherds who demand their flock follow blindly. We are asked to follow blindly because ‘the party’ demands it. No thinking for ourselves, we can’ be trusted. Just follow.
Today, I experienced the total opposite. We gathered at our Renton Salvation Army Corps(church) for our Valentine’s brunch. There was such a peace among the congregation. Everyone jumped in where they could and there was no sign of selfishness anywhere. It was as if everyone there was focused on unity. It was as if we were all united by the same spirit. And we were! The Holy Spirit’s presence blended our hearts into a special, almost magical unity. Something you could never predict or fabricate. A natural flow of kindness and true appreciation for each other was present. It was a place and a time where everyone wanted to be,… and together.
Jesus’ plan for the church works! And it works well. It proves that everything He said was actually true. The church, our Salvation Army Corps, proved it to be true today.
I hope you will find a place that will make you feel at home. I hope the world finds it too. Whether you are without a place to call home as millions of immigrants are right now, or you have a comfortable place to put your feet up and relax, peace is something we all hope for.
What made our church service work today wasn’t the place. It was the people who have been transformed by the grace of God through Jesus Christ. He brought hope into each heart who calls upon His name.
Jesus, He works. Try Him out America!
